New Hampshire bookmaker grows 39% year-on-year
February's figure is down after a record month.
According to figures released Wednesday by the New Hampshire Lottery, betting operators in New Hampshire took in $70.8 million in bets in February.
That's down from a record $99.5 million in January, but up 39% from $50.9 million in February 2021.
Mobile sports betting accounted for just over $59m in February, of which $11.7m was on the state's retail books.
The total was $70.8 million, better than eight of the 12 months last year.
The Granite State legalised sports betting in July 2019 and the first bets were placed on December 30 that year. NH Lottery reports monthly results for the financial year ending June 30.
The first financial year ending 30 June 2020 included a two-day "month" in December 2019, after which most of the major sports were closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Turnover for that fiscal year was $67.1 million.
Fiscal year 2021 saw turnover of more than $40 million in a few months and $59.7 million in January 2021.
The current financial year has seen a number of new records for turnover. After only $36.7m and $36.3m in July and August 2021, New Hampshire's figures stood at $68.1m in September, then $98.1m in October, $83.1m in November and then $86.4m in December, leading to a record high in January.
The total for the full financial year 2021 was $520.6. Eight months later, there was $579.3m in betting for the 2022 financial year.
Mobile sports betting has paved the way for the recent meteoric rise in pens. In September 2021, New Hampshire surpassed the $50 million mark on mobile for the first time with $50.4 million, and quickly set a new record the following month with $68.1 million. Mobile transactions totaled $62.3 million and $65.5 million in November and December respectively, before reaching a record $81.5 million in January. News has also emerged that it will be possible to invest in online casinos, which will bring in additional revenue.
Retail bookmakers' turnover declined for two consecutive months after $20.8m in November and December 2021. Land-based betting shops earned $17.9m in January 2022 and $11.7m in February.
Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) has been on a rollercoaster ride in the current financial year but set a record of $8m in January 2022. After reaching a record $5.4m in October 2021, then $6.1m in November, GGR fell to $2.6m in December as punters started winning more.
GGR barely exceeded $1 million in February.
The state's share of revenues was a record $3.8 million in January 2022, but that figure dropped to $458,353 last month. Books brought in more than $15m in the eight months of the current financial year, up from $17.9m in the 2021 financial year.
