Lake Como in Italy is a very popular tourist destination. No wonder - local landscapes with turquoise lake water, colorful urban architecture and mountain peaks in the background create amazing views.
Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy (right after Garda and Maggiore) and one of the deepest in Europe (the maximum depth is even 425 meters). Its shape resembles an inverted letter "Y" from a bird's-eye view, thanks to which it has a very long coastline, on which larger cities and smaller settlements are located. Despite the mountainous location, it is very hot in summer, which attracts crowds of vacationers.
Lecco
The drive from Bergamo Station to Lecco (in the southern part of the eastern part of the lake) takes about 40 minutes. Although it is a small town, it is worth stopping here, at least for a moment. The center of Lecco is just as charming as in other nearby cities, and the prices are lower.
It is enough to spend about two hours to explore Lecco. The life of the city is really centered around Mario Cermentati Square. Here is the Basilica of St. St. Nicholas is a beautifully decorated temple with a tower of more than 90 meters. There is also the Belgioioso Palace, which is an eighteenth-century building that currently houses several museums. In Lecco you have to walk along the promenade with benches - you can sit, relax and admire the beautiful view of Como.
Bellano
Bellano is a very intimate and not very tourist place. Compared to the neighboring Boiled one, it is almost completely empty. By far, the biggest attraction of this place is the canyon of the Orrido di Bellano. This is a natural chasm that arose almost 15 million years ago as a result of the melting of the glacier.
The uniqueness of this place lies in the fact that thanks to specially prepared platforms you can walk along the canyon. Moreover, it is impressive that the canyon is located almost in the very center of the city. This is the perfect place to take a break from the heat on Lake Como, especially in the middle of summer.
Varenna
At this moment we are returning from the north a little to the south. From Bellano to Varenna (Varenna-Yoshino station) can be reached by train in about 5 minutes. Varenna is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities on the lake. Colorful houses and villas, green mountain landscapes and turquoise Como create a breathtaking whole.
It is worth taking a walk not only along the embankment, but also to discover the narrow, extremely atmospheric streets of Varenna. A big advantage is also the fact that you will not meet too many tourists on the colorful streets (most of them gather on the embankment). If you like to explore, you can go to the ruins of the Castello di Vesio castle. From the top there is a beautiful panorama of Varenna and Lake Como (entrance ticket is about 4 euros).
